Sooo, I have been thinking I would like to make some custom fortune cookies to include in a care package. Has anyone done this before? Tips? Favorite recipes?
I found this recipe which has gotten some good reviews, but I'd love one that comes with a g* seal of approval. _________________ my website and knitting patterns

I've used Martha Stewart's twice with pretty good success. But! You do have to work fast! Some other recipe mentioned using the egg container to hold the cookies as they cool (skinny side down, unlike the eggs). It works a lot better than just placing them on a cookie sheet or towel or parchment paper!
ETA: I like to dip the skinny tips in melted chocolate! And one error for cookie cooling! _________________ "Does that mean I have a superhero complex? Well, maybe. But shouldn't there be more heros in the world anyway?" - Moon

I tried once with not so great results. I just couldn't get the cookies folded properly, and the cookies themselves didn't have the right texture. I seem to recall using the Martha recipe, but it was a long time ago.
Sorry this is such a downer! I hope yours turn out great, then I can be motivated to try again! _________________ i live at the foot of a mountain |

I don't know if I'm posting too late but a friend of mine once used tweezers to remove fortunes from cookies and put in her own customized fortunes. _________________ Many that live deserve death. Wow, that's actually kind of a great idea!
I was going to make the fortune cookies this weekend but got side tracked by other projects (gardening, decluttering, selling decluttered items on craigslist, etc.). I would like to have a go at actually making them so I think I'm going to try that next weekend. And if it doesn't work, out come the tweezers and store bought cookies! _________________ my website and knitting patterns

Okay, I made some! I wound up using the recipe I linked to, because I didn't want to bother with heavy whipping cream.
Verdict: The recipe recommended leaving in the oven for 5 minutes, but I found that was too long. Just under 4 seemed about right. The folding is actually relatively easy, but you do have to move fast! I used JR's tip to place them in an egg carton to help them hold their shape, and that really helped. The recipe says it makes 6, but I totally got 8 cookies (only 5 that I actually managed to get off the tray and fold properly though)
The one downside is that they really do taste pretty egg-y. Not so great. I think if I do them again, I will probably try adding some more flavorings (maybe the five spice powder...). In the meantime, I may pick up some chocolate at the grocery store tomorrow and try dipping the ends in that to fancy them up a bit. _________________ my website and knitting patterns
