Glitter,
I have never made a quilt but I've been wanting to for ages.
I have done some patchwork and some smaller quilted projects when i was much younger and they turned out ok.
I am wishing to make (maybe start with smaller lapquilt or cushions?) a quilt in velvet or felted wool patches - eventually one of each.
I am going to do some reading but would love any beginner tips you can share. I am not very academic about these things. i usually do trial and error, but it seems quilting has quite a few methods that are accepted as the right way.
P.s. I have collected the fabric scraps - am such a procrastinator. _________________ Finally getting a web presence. It's not much yet but I had to make a start: http://lolasmum.etsy.com

I've been thinking about trying quilting more and more - maybe we should have a mini quilt-along or something :) I thought about doing a class but I don't like to follow instructions, I like learning by making mistakes :P _________________ And when I take you back, it's like a bullet for the pain. |

I just started using a walking foot for the quilting part, and it totally does make a difference. They aren't really that expensive for the generic ones, either.
Also, basting spray!!! It keeps the layers of fabric from moving around when you're quilting. I'm such a fan.
Other than that... can't think of anything. Trying something little for the first project is a good idea. Baby quilts or lap quilts are great. Quilting really isn't as hard as it looks! _________________ The most overlooked thing about Morgan is that she's sort of like a really crappy version of Bea Arthur. |

Oh, I think I've posted this like 20 times before, but I always use an old blanket from the second hard store for the batting. It's cheap, and you can always find one big enough so you don't have to piece together pieces of batting. You can also use old sheets for the backing if you want it plain, or cut them up for fabric.
I also usually cut the back bigger than the top and the batting. I leave about 1.5 inches extra on all sides, so I can fold that over to the front and use it as the (fake-)binding. It's way easier than sewing on actual binding. _________________ The most overlooked thing about Morgan is that she's sort of like a really crappy version of Bea Arthur. |

I was just thinking this morning that I really ought to try a quilt one of these days. Of course, because I can't do anything the easy way, I am now plotting out ridiculous quilt block patterns. We'll see where this goes.... _________________ my website and knitting patterns

Most quilt block patterns aren't too hard, it's just repetitive. I could never make more than like, 10 blocks so I always make either HUGE blocks or just plain squares of fabric with fancy stitching.
Or are you making a Lone Star quilt? LOL _________________ "Fun is where you find it." --jackierocket |
