Art vs. Craft
As much as I'd like to see Art actually face off with Craft in a ring, this time of year is more about togetherness...and, if you've been following crafter/maker blogs, this is the season where we think more about buying handmade. So hip hip hooray for Art vs. Craft in Milwaukee, WI. While we may not put Art in the UFC Octagon with Craft, if you're in the area, definitely this is the show to check out. Plenty of info to be found here, here and here.> Marimello on 11/26/08 #

Crafts as Art
I've noticed an interesting trend of galleries hosting exhibits that feature crafts not just as products for sale, but as complex objects worthy of study. Two local examples are Making It: The Art of Contemporary Craft at Gallery RFD in Swainsboro, Ga. (Dec. 13 to Jan. 3.) and the Hand.Craft.It Festival at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center in Madison, Ga. (Nov. 18 to Jan. 20).This quote from Gallery RFD is one of the best I've read about the DIY movement: "While the Industrial Revolution may have worked wonders for the production process in terms of output and standardization, it has arguably written the creator’s role out of the process. As machines replace humans or minimize their necessity in ever more labor fields, we are witnessing nostalgia for the return of a human element, lest automation render us obsolete. Though few are clamoring to give up their tools of convenience, individuation and uniqueness are now novelties as witnessed in the rising popularity of mass-customization." The gallery is calling for "works in any media that project evidence of a human hand or craftsmanship."
Anyone know about similar shows in your area?
