meatpaper

Meatpaper is "a print magazine of art and ideas about meat." Editors Sasha Wizansky and Amy Standen are going strong with Issue #7 on its way to an arty book/magazine store near you. There will be a launch party Monday April 20th at Camino restaurant in Oakland... chock full of treats for Bay Area food lovers and makers.

Artists Space Daily

Artists Space, a non-profit art space in SoHo, has recently launched some new web based projects. This one downloads a new image of an artists' work to your computer's desktop every day. The works are selected by a group of international curators and the software is free. Click here to download instantly. (Works only on Mac computers)

Art Subscriptions

Art collecting feels out of reach for most of the folks I know (artist themselves who don't have a lot of extra cash to play with) but there are a couple of exciting Bay Area efforts that make art objects accessible through the production of multiples. The Thing and The Present Group both work with individual artists to create editions available quarterly to subscribers. The Present Group projects range from books and prints to DVD's and sculptural objects made in limited editions. The Thing subscription is always some kind of manufactured everyday object incorporating text. Both offer a chance to support art production in a way that is both adventurous and affordable.

Port Huron Project

I have long been a fan of Creative Time, a New York based organization that presents "innovative art in the public realm" so I was very happy to hear they'd be bringing a production to my neighborhood in Oakland. Mark Tribe's Port Huron Project has been on my radar for some time now as well so I'm doubly excited for this particular CT production.

Sci-Fi House Truck

When I was little my parents converted a school-bus into a mobile-home. We lived on the bus through one Wisconsin winter (bus insulated by hay bales) before moving it and us to a commune in Tennessee. Though California was not one of our stops along the way, my parents and our handcrafted home were part of a movement that started in San Francisco an rippled out across the country. Artists Heather & Ivan Morison import this DIY tradition for their contribution to the 2008 inaugural Folkestone Triennial. The couple has constructed a 'Science Fiction library in the style of a 1970s Californian House Truck.' If you happen to live near or be visiting the South East Coast of England check out their rolling homage to H.G. Wells as well as what looks to be an incredible lineup of temporary public projects by other international superstars. June 14 - September 14.

Dawn Chorus

Artist Marcus Coates makes a stunning contribution to the world of birdsong related art with 'Dawn Chorus' - a video made by slowing down field recordings of birds singing at dawn so that humans can imitate them. The result is video of people in everyday settings sped up to recreate the original birdsong. Thanks Amy.
